Event Details

Professor Ricardo De Mambro Santos will provide an introduction to the exhibition Holy Beauty: Northern Renaissance Prints Discovered in an Early English Bible, examining, in particular, the series of engravings displayed at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

Under the creative authority of models such as Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian, sixteenth-century Northern artists developed new strategies in the representation of religious themes, often providing unprecedented interpretations of well-known biblical narratives. By the end of the century, in the complex interplay of Protestant Reformation and Catholic Reform, images produced in the Low Countries – especially prints – had to perform the difficult task of responding simultaneously to the expectations of different audiences.
