Fifty four Salem and the
Fifty four Salem and the Mid-Willamette Valley artists have painted outdoors, “en plein air”, from May through August at some of the most unique and picturesque places in the Salem area. And as a new collaboration this year, we had twelve poets from the Mid-Willamette Poet Society participate by creating poems inspired by their visit to the sites. Locations included the Bush House Museum grounds, Willamette Heritage Center, Gaiety Hollow, Sebright Gardens, the Martha Springer Botanical Gardens at Willamette University, Minto Island Growers Farm, the Glen at Capital Manor, the World Beat Festival, Red Hawk Winery, Cubanisimo Vineyards, Pudding River Winery, Hummingwood Farm in Stayton, the Salem Art Fair, the downtown Salem core and Riverfront Park, and Baskett Slough Wildlife Reserve.
Jurors this year for the awards are Brent Allen, artist and manager of Elsinore Framing and Fine Art Gallery and Judy Phipps, well-known local landscape painter and pastel artist. The 9 awards selected by the jurors will be: Best of Show, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, four honorable mentions and an Art Department award. The 10th award will be a People’s Choice Award to be determined at the end of the exhibit, which will be on display from October 5th through the 29th.
The community is invited to see the collection of finished artwork at the opening reception and awards presentation on First Wednesday, October 5th, from 5 to 8pm at Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery, 444 Ferry St. SE, in downtown Salem. Light refreshments will be available, and live background music will accompany the event.
Additionally, a special poetry reading is scheduled for Saturday, October 8th, 3-5pm at the gallery.
Painting “en plein air” is a French expression which means “in the open air”, and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. As artists paint outdoors, they develop an understanding of the natural world and how to accurately represent landscapes, street scenes, architecture, gardens, skies, trees and coastlines.
Paint The Town is presented by Artists In Action, a local non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization with members who specialize in a variety of visual media. The mission of Paint The Town is to raise awareness of the arts and artists in the Salem area, to present an opportunity to observe artists creating, and to offer artists an organized event where they can create art outdoors with an exhibit and awards opportunity.
