Festival Chorale Oregon opens its 40th Season with a performance of Brahms Requiem on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 4 pm at the Elsinore Theatre in downtown Salem.
Ein Deutches Requiem by Johannes Brahms is a beautifully melodic work with rich harmonies, sung in the German language. While the Requiem Mass in the Roman Catholic liturgy begins with prayers for the dead (“Grant them eternal rest, O Lord”), Brahms German Requiem focuses on the living, beginning with the text “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted” from the Beatitudes. This theme—transition from anxiety to comfort—recurs in five of the seven movements.
Solveig Holmquist, Founding Artistic Director, conducts the 100-voice chorale, joined by Laura Aguero, soprano, Brett Peldyak, baritone, and a symphonic orchestra.
Tickets are available at www.festivalchorale.org or at the Elsinore Theatre box office, 170 High St NE, Salem. This season concert goers may enjoy premiere seating in the mezzanine with special tickets. Students, seniors 62 and better, and Oregon Trail Card holders enjoy special discounts.
