Willamette Heritage Center’s August course combines textile arts and homesteading, teaching you how to create baskets out of ivy pulled directly from the ground! Instructor Peter Bauer, from Rewild Portland, has been teaching ivy basket classes since 2009, and began learning basketry when he was only 11 years old. Now, he is the founder of Rewild Portland, a non-profit that focuses on environmental education through earth-based arts and crafts.
Students should be prepared to get dirty, and bring thick leather gloves, pruning shears, a water bottle, snacks, good boots, a pen or pencil, and a notebook. A change of clothes and some towels are probably a good idea, as you will be pulling ivy by hand around the WHC grounds. By the end of class, you’ll have turned ivy into a 9″x7″ round twined basket to take home and enjoy.
Pre-registration is required for this course by August 4th at 5 pm. Registration costs $45 for WHC members, $50 for non-members, and $40 when registering for three or more classes at one time. There is no materials fee. To register, visit willametteheritage.org/classes-workshops/ or email firstname.lastname@example.org
