Event Details

Five hundred years ago most of the world knew nothing about Maya civilization. This advanced culture of over 10 million people inhabited thousands of cities spread through tropical jungles in Mexico and Central America. Abandoned around 900 AD, these cities of stone were quickly covered by lush growth. By the mid-1500s when Spaniards appeared, these cities were so completely buried that few locals knew they existed. By the 1700s, explorers rediscovered lost cities of stone, and over the next 300 years archeologists began revealing the impressive civilization that once existed.

In this presentation, Leonide (Lennie) Martin shares the process of doing research on ancient Maya culture. Over 20 years of study and many field trips to Maya ruins underlie her historical fiction set in the Maya Classic Period. Learn how she used facts and imagination to create compelling stories about actual Mayan queens and their world.
