For brief moments in time, sometimes for less than a single day, a fruiting and near-floral display takes place that rivals any of the world’s greatest cultivated and natural gardens. In these moments, the normally invisible world of mushrooms and other fungi suddenly creates fruiting bodies of unusual colors and shapes. Few of us ever get to see them, but mushroom expert and photographer Taylor Lockwood travels the world to capture their images for us to see in National Geographic, New York Times, Washington Post, and other fine publications. Sometimes he presents his photos in person at special events around the world. This time he is coming to Salem, Oregon, to show us what he’s found, so you, your family, and friends can see these precious, never to be seen again, moments.
Lockwood will present “The Mushroom Art Universe of Taylor Lockwood” at a special event of the Willamette Valley Mushroom Society (WVMS) on Thursday October 25th at 7- 8:30 p.m. at the Salem Library’s Loucks Auditorium for $5 per person, free if you’re a member of WVMS.
For 62 years, Willamette Valley Mushroom Society in Salem, Oregon, has brought together wild mushroom and fungi enthusiasts from the Salem area to explore, discover, and learn about the amazing variety of wild mushrooms and other fungi in Western and Central Oregon. The organization meets on the first Monday of the month, except in January, July, August, and September at the Woodland Chapel, 582 High Street in Salem at 7 p.m. Programs include presentations by mushroom experts, wild edible mushroom cooking demonstrations by a local chef, wild mushroom identification tips and other related subjects. Members can also sign up to attend frequent mushroom hunting trips, called forays. The forays include experienced mushroom hunters to help new wild mushroom enthusiasts learn how to find and identify mushrooms.
